To apply rhinestones to canvas cleanly: work one color at a time, lift each stone with a wax tipped applicator pen, place a dot of glue the size of the stone's base, and set the stone flat side down without pressing hard. That is the whole technique. Everything below is about making it comfortable for several hours at a time.
Set up your table first
Ten minutes of setup saves an evening of frustration.
- Work on a flat, hard surface. A soft tablecloth lets the canvas flex and stones shift.
- Put a lamp to the side, not behind you. Side light makes the printed color spots much easier to read.
- Pour one color into the tray at a time and keep the rest sealed. Mixed colors are the number one time waster.
- Keep a damp cloth and a toothpick within reach for glue cleanup.
The placement motion
- Press the applicator pen tip into the wax pad. A small amount is enough. Too much wax leaves residue on the stone.
- Touch the pen to the flat top of a rhinestone in the tray. It will lift straight up.
- Squeeze a dot of glue onto the color spot. The dot should be about as wide as the stone base and no wider.
- Set the stone down flat side first, then lift the pen straight up. Do not twist.
- Nudge it into position with tweezers within the first few seconds if it lands off center.
Work color by color, not area by area
It is tempting to finish one corner of the design completely. Do not. Placing every stone of one color across the whole canvas is faster, keeps your spacing consistent, and means you only open one color at a time. The design fills in all at once near the end, which is also the most satisfying way to watch it come together.
Five mistakes that cause a messy finish
- Too much glue. Excess squeezes up between stones and dries as a visible haze. Small dots, always.
- Pressing stones down hard. Pressure pushes glue out the sides. Let the stone rest on the dot.
- Crowding. Leave a hair of space between stones. Packing them tight forces later stones out of line and leaves gaps elsewhere.
- Rushing the edges. Outline stones define the shape. Place the outline of a section first, then fill the middle.
- Working tired. Placement accuracy drops off fast. Stop at a color boundary so it is easy to pick up again.
Fixing a stone that is in the wrong place
If the glue is still wet, lift the stone with tweezers, wipe the spot with a damp cloth, and reset it. If the glue has set, slide a toothpick under the edge of the stone and lift with steady pressure rather than a jerk. Scrape the old glue off the canvas before placing a new stone, or the replacement will sit higher than its neighbors.
Drying and hanging
Leave the finished canvas flat overnight before hanging so every stone has fully cured. Once it has, a rigid wood canvas panel hangs straight from a nail or a hook. Dust it with a dry soft brush rather than a cloth, since a cloth can catch on the faceted tops.
